Central Coffee: Keeping the Community Caffeinated

Central Coffee is a coffee shop, but it’s also more than that. This Bloor & Dufferin business is a board game café, registered charity, church, community centre and of course, coffee shop.

Central Coffee opened its doors in 2016, making it a newer addition to Bloor & Dufferin. But despite its short tenure, many in the area already see Central Coffee as an emerging cornerstone of the neighbourhood.

Central is a subset of Catch The Fire Ministry, a global ministry with churches, schools, and missions all over the world. It’s also a member of Partners in Harvest, another worldwide network of churches and ministries. At this Bloor & Dufferin outpost the church is located in the back and the coffee shop is up front.

The church behind Central Coffee was established for a young adult audience at the neighbouring YMCA in 2005. Its pastor had an idea to expand the church into a coffee shop to help support the local community, and in 2016 that idea became a reality.

The money raised through their freshly brewed offerings is donated to new Toronto immigrants and those in need in the Bloor & Dufferin community, specifically struggling families, at-risk youth, recovering addicts and those in ESL courses. The ministry also makes a point to staff Central Coffee with at-risk youth and single mothers.

Weekly specials at Central Coffee include Tooney Tuesdays ($2 small specialty drinks) and Baked Good Fridays (half-off baked goods). The displayed artwork by local artists is also for sale.

Central Coffee is new to the community, but through its good works and delicious caffeinated offerings it’s easy to see Central as a future community hub for a neighbourhood on the come up.
